This week, the FDA released their final rule updating the definition of “Healthy Foods.” The new guidance puts an emphasis on fresh produce, while putting limits in other areas.
The industry has been waiting for this definition for some time. Previous guidance included limits on saturated fat, sodium, and total fat. The new rule limits added sugars and sodium.
The goal is to make it easier for consumers to find foods that align with their diet preferences. FDA Commissioner Robert Calif says consumers will now be able to look for a “healthy” claim to help them find nutritional foods for their families.
