The robbers made a two-foot hole in a wall to get into the locker area and smashed the bank’s alarm.
In a crime that went unnoticed and left police searching for evidence, a group of robbers drilled a massive hole in the wall of a Union Bank of India (UBI) branch in Surat, shattered six lockers, and took cash, jewellry, and other valuables worth millions of rupees.
The banking employees discovered the robbery at Kim Crossroads on Tuesday morning. The incident reportedly occurred between the intervening nights of Monday and Tuesday.
According to NDTV, an electric cutter that may have been used to shatter the lockers was also discovered there.
As per the police, the robbers made a two-foot hole in a wall to get into the locker area. They smashed the bank’s alarm and cut connections to turn off surveillance cameras to reduce the chance of being caught.
Reportedly, the group of thieves broke six of the 70 lockers and took possession of the items, which mostly consisted of cash and jewellry, and then ran away.
The police is investigating the matter and is scanning CCTV footages of the nearby area.
“There was no security guard on the spot. We are checking CCTVs that are installed near the bank. A probe is underway,” Surat District Police Chief Hitesh Joysar said.
